Louis The Finger Rocks The Cotton Cafe!

It’s not often I crawl out of my cave and venture into the world. I’d much rather remain deep within the recesses of that dark musty space, writing stories no one will ever read. But a rare event occurred Saturday night. I put on my street clothes and took my family on an excursion to a charming little café, in the old part of town.

If you’ve seen the movie American Reunion, of the American Pie franchise, you may have glimpsed the café, although the town had been made over to resemble the fictional location of East Great Falls Michigan, for filming.

A band, Louis The finger, (sounds like a character from a Noir crime novel) had booked a gig to play. Their hard driving, high energy show rocked the house. James, the singer/guitarist, is a real showman. His relaxed, fun loving style, and high degree of proficiency made his performance a pure joy.

The way Bryant’s heavy jamming on the bass vibrated the floor, I wouldn’t have been surprised to see mortar crumbling from the walls of the old building. I don’t think I saw the guy stop grinning the whole time. The fact he got his hand crushed by a backhoe a few years ago makes his ability to play at all, miraculous. And his skill to go all night without missing a note, even more impressive.

I sat not more than six feet away from guitarist, Josh, getting an up-close view of his intense concentration, and technical prowess. His speed and the precision of his hand movements, were a sight to behold.

I can’t truly enjoy a rock band if the drummer sits in the background merely tapping out a beat, not doing his best to bring down the house. Jake did not disappoint. He rattled my creaky old skull with his cymbal so many times, I almost wished I’d brought ear plugs. To give you an idea of how hard the guy worked, he was glowing red by the end of the evening. That’s not an exaggeration.

I could sit here describing the band and their sound all day, but no words will do the music justice. You need to hear it for yourself.
